NEW YORK (AP) -- Ex-New York governor Eliot Spitzer has been rejected by the Harvard Club. His spokeswoman Linda Linden tells The New York Times that Spitzer was disappointed that his application for membership to the club was rejected. But she noted that the Ivy League school had asked him to speak last year.

The club has declined comment.

Spitzer resigned as governor in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal. This month, he joined CNN as a commentator.

Harvard Club has more than 11,000 members. Membership is open to alumni and people with ties to the university. They must undergo an interview process before an admissions committee.

According to its mission statement, Harvard Club "promotes fellowship among its members and reflects the spirit of Harvard University."
