Matt Doheny loans $2.165 million to his campaign
Matt Doheny has loaned his campaign nearly $2.2 million.
The republican candidate in the 23rd Congressional District has the highest campaign debt of any other New York candidate for the House of Representatives. The $2 million debt stands out even more for Matt Doheny's campaign because the full amount is owed to Matt Doheny.
The former Wall Street businessman has loaned himself $475,000 in the last week for spending during the final days of the campaign. Prior to that he had already given his campaign several loan installments totaling $1.69 million. All totaled the Doheny for Congress campaign owes the candidate $2.165 million.
By contrast Doheny's opponent, democratic incumbent Bill Owens, loaned his own campaign $160,500. It's a significant personal loan, but pales in comparison to the self financing of the Doheny campaign.
Both candidates are in the final hour of a high stakes political poker game. Doheny pushed in his pile of money with an all-in bet knowing his only way of retrieving that amount of cash is to win and start fund raising to restock his bank account. Recent polls favor the incumbent democrat by a slight margin, but political experts watching the race say it is a toss up on Election Night.
