Voters who have grown fatigued by the campaign flyers coming in the mail, the campaign phone calls ringing at dinner time and the campaign ads eating up television air time will get relief tomorrow on Election Day. They will also get a chance for their individual votes to change the balance of power in Albany and Washington.
NBC News Deputy Political Director Mark Murray told CNYCentral that the Upstate New York congressional races are being viewed nationally as part of a critical group of potential swing seats that could turn control of the House of Representatives over to the republicans. Murray cites polls and pundits who are calling the 23rd Congressional District based in the North Country and the 24th Congressional District based in the Mohawk Valley as toss ups. That means democratic incumbent Bill Owens and Michael Arcuri both will have nervous nights waiting to see if they defeat Matt Doheny and Richard Hanna, respectively.
The NY State Senate is also looking to Central and Northern New York for key races that could turn control of the senate from democrat to republican. The 49th District Senate seat with democratic incumbent David Valesky against republican newcomer Andrew Russo is one tight contest. The other is democratic incumbent Darrel Aubertine versus republican newcomer Patty Ritchie.
