SYRACUSE --
The popular website Groupon.com has started a Syracuse page. Businesses are already signing up, and people are already buying.
Here's how the website works: People who sign up get an email each day about the daily deal. However, for an offer to be valid, a certain number of people have to buy it. That's where the "group" part of "groupon" comes in. If enough people buy it before the clock runs out, a message pops up the "the deal is on."
Mario Pirrello, who owns Earth's Own Natural Market and Cafe, put a coupon for his business on the site. In just a few hours, more than 20 people bought a coupon.
"We absolutely love it," says Pirrello. "Every time we can show a new customer what we do, that chance is worth everything to us."
Groupon receives a portion of the proceeds from the coupon sales. More than 15 million Groupons have been sold so far across the country.
