Police at the scene on Shirley Dr. on November 7th
SYRACUSE -- A number of shootings involving teenagers has caused concern in the community, and the Syracuse Police Department.
Over the past week, eight teens have been shot, and in one of those incidents, a 14-year-old was arrested.
Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler says police are increasing efforts to keep guns off the street, and making arrests.
"We will continue to lock people up. We will continue to step up our effort combating gangs and gang violence within the community, and we're going to continue to make arrests."
Community members say parents need to be more accountable for their children in order to stop this trend of violence.
"A lot of these kids, if they were parented right in the first place, there wouldn't be all this violence growing up," says Anne Richter, a Shirley Drive resident.
Sunday night at 321 Shirley Drive on the city's southside, four teens were shot while standing in the garage.
Chief Fowler says the community needs to be more cooperative as well. He says he has gone to a number of community meetings to pitch an idea of putting security cameras on certain streets. But he says so far, residents have not been receptive to the idea.
According to Syracuse Police Department statistics, there were reports of 14 people shot in October, the most of any month this year.
Chief Fowler says while shootings have been on the rise lately, so have arrests and weapons recovered.
