A heads-up for those of you travel over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend. State police will be out in full force looking for people who aren't buckled up.
The zero tolerance seat belt enforcement campaign called "It's Click It, Or Ticket" is designed to prevent highway tragedies over the busy travel weekend. Starting Monday, November 15, police will set up nearly 100 checkpoints across the state and be on the look out for anyone not wearing their seat belt. The campaign will last through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
"The safety belt enforcement emphasis before the holidays is an annual effort to remind motorists that we want them to have a safe and enjoyable holiday season with their loved ones", said Major Kevin Molinari. "It makes no sense that there are still some individuals who don't get the message. This enforcement effort will focus on those individuals. The use of seatbelts saves lives and troopers will accept no excuses."
The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is traditionally one of the busiest travel times of the year.
Last year, troopers issued nearly 19,000 seat belt tickets statewide during the two-week Thanksgiving Holiday enforcement campaign. Another 789 drivers were cited for child restraint violations. Troopers also investigated more than 3,000 crashes during the same time period, seven of them were deadly.
"Any single serious injury or death from a motor vehicle collision is one too many, but during the holiday season, it can be especially tragic," said Major Molinari. "There is no acceptable loss of life, and no acceptable excuse for not buckling up.
