LIVERPOOL -- Construction crews will start removing flooring tile from Liverpool Middle school over Thanksgiving break. The work will begin Wednesday, November 24 when school is closed for the holiday recess.

According to Superintendent Dr. Richard Johns, it comes in light of asbestos found in some of the materials used in the flooring, which must be removed. School leaders say this type of asbestos is not airborne. Nevertheless, contractors will wear protective clothing, rope off a 25-foot section around the removal area, install barriers with two layers of plastic inside the removal area.

Air monitoring will also be done to ensure the safe removal of the asbestos. School officials expect the results of air quality testing on Saturday, November 27. Students, teachers and staff members will not be allowed in the building until air samples are deemed acceptable by state standards.
