CAMILLUS -- A former altar boy will spend the next 3 1/2 years in prison for robbing his church. Michael Delaney was sentenced in Onondaga County court this morning.
Delaney pleaded guilty to felony robbery last month in exchange for the lighter sentence. He could have faced up to 15 years in prison.
Delaney admits he stole a church collection basket from an altar boy at Holy Family Church in Camillus in 2008. Police say he hit inside the parish center until a church volunteer walked in with the collection basket. That's when, police say, he showed a black pellet gun, stole the money and took off.
Delaney is already serving time for crimes in Nassau County downstate. He was attending school there when he was arrested and convicted of several burglaries.
