UTICA (AP) -- A 42-year-old man is being sent to jail for his role in a scheme to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in coins from parking meters in Syracuse.
Sean McGuigan of Rome was sentenced to five years probation and was ordered by an Oneida County Court judge to spend the first six months in jail.
The Observer-Dispatch of Utica reports that McGuigan and partner Ronald Mancuso had earlier pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal possession of stolen property in connection with the thefts between 2000 and 2005. Authorities say McGuigan emptied coins from meters while working for Loomis Fargo & Co. and then gave the coins to Mancuso to count and split up.
Between them, the men turned in $322,000 in cash when the scheme was revealed to federal agents in 2009.
Mancuso will be sentenced Thursday.
