SYRACUSE -- Syracuse Department of Public Works crews were busy Wednesday clearing catch basin tops across the city.

Because of the heavy rain and the leaves in the streets, many basins were covered with leaves which kept the water from going down. That causes flooding issues in the streets which happened Wednesday.

Some residents have a combined sewer/storm system. Systems can have problems with capacity issues when leaves get in the sewer because it doesn't leave room for the water which can lead to a sewer back-up.

Officials emphasize placing leaves either in bags or up between the curb and the sidewalk so they are out of the street.

"We can use all the help we can get," said Vince Esposito, superintendent of sewers and streams for Syracuse.

There are 11,500 storm drains in the city.
