ITHACA, NY -- The Ithaca city school district had to deal with flooding today, after heavy rains caused the city's storm drain to clog.

Superintendent Judith Pastel says she was shocked to see the water rushing toward the high school.

"There was like this geyser coming up where one of the city storm drains was," she says.  "It was like, 'Oh no, this is not going to work.  That water's just pouring onto our property.'"

Pastel says within 15 minutes, three inches of water filled the parking lot and leaked into the school.  The water brought branches, logs, and leaves onto the school's property.

Eight classrooms were damaged, but the district was able to move students into other rooms and keep them in school.  Four classrooms are still unusable, but Pastel hopes to have those cleaned up soon.

She says insurance will cover most of the damage but the school will have to pick up the tab for the cleanup crews.  She says that could cost $5,000-$10,000.
