A popular social networking site which connects old friends and gives you the chance to make new ones is being blamed for a spike in divorces. In an ironic twist, the website which brings millions of people together on a daily basis is breaking many apart.
In fact, lawyers claim Facebook is being cited in almost one in five of online divorce petitions.
Ken Savage of Boston started the website called Facebook Cheating after he caught his wife having an affair online. Savage says his wife started chatting with an old boyfriend on Facebook and he later caught her cheating. They have since divorced and he's turned to the internet to work through his anger and pain and share his story with others.
His story seems to be resonating. Lauren writes on his site, "Wow, I am glad to see that I am not the only one that this happened to. After five years in a relationship where we also lived together, I caught my boyfriend cheating using Facebook chat."
Another isn't ready to point the finger at social media sites saying, "Before a significant other starts to wander, there has to be cracks in the relationship foundation. While these site may facilitate connection to another person, they are not the reason people are breaking the existing commitments."
