NORTH SYRACUSE -- A North Syracuse school is using the power of music to help raise money for families still struggling to recover from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Smith Road Elementary School music teacher Becky Hall came up with the idea for a benefit concert three months ago. Hall says so far the school has collected close to $400, and they hope to double that.
"The kids are into it. The teachers are into it it's just awesome," she says.
Smith Road principal Jeanette Clark says the parents and students response to the "Beach Days" fundraiser has been overwhelming.
"They always rise to the occasion. Just when you think you've gone deep enough, people reach into their pockets and give more and more," she says.
Smith Road student Aviana Fedele says its important that people don't forget about the victims of the oil spill especially on the holidays.
"They don't have enough money. The homes got destroyed and all the animals are getting hurt so we wanted to donate so that we could get more supplies and we could help," she says.
Smith Road students will hold their final fundraising concert tonight at Gillete Road Middle School in North Syracuse. The concert starts at 6:00 p.m.
