WASHINGTON (AP) -- Elizabeth Edwards is thanking those who she says "support and inspire" her, as she faces the possibility that she has just weeks to live.
A family statement says doctors have told Edwards that there would be no further benefit from continuing to treat her cancer.
A friend says her estranged husband, former presidential candidate John Edwards, and their children have been at her side.
She is said to be pain-free and in good spirits despite her condition.
Elizabeth Edwards posted on her Facebook page that she can't express the love and gratitude she feels to those who've supported and inspired her. She wrote "the days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered."
The 61-year-old separated from her husband after he admitted to an extramarital affair. She has battled breast cancer since 2004.
