SYRACUSE -- For the Syracuse Department of Public Works, and DPW's across Central New York, the latest winter storm poses a challenge.
It's not because of the amount of snow that's fallen--it's because the snow has not stopped.
Syracuse DPW crews have been working around the clock and rotating in 12-hour shifts. Workers may have to stick to that schedule through next week if another storm moves in.
The DPW commissioner says he's been saving his overtime budget all year in case a storm like the one we've seen were to hit.
"We get the roads salted and plowed and we go on to our other routes," said Pete O'Connor. Because (the snowfall) is so steady, we have to pull them off the side routes and go back onto the main routes to keep the main routes and the emergency routes open. That's very hard on us. It tries your patience because you're doing a good job and you turn around and in a couple hours you're back on the same street."
Crews hope the storm lets up so they'll be able to get to the side streets and residential areas sooner.
