HERKIMER (AP) -- A 23-year-old northern New York man was sent to prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed his two friends last fall.
Matthew Lewis of Eagle Bay was sentenced Wednesday in Herkimer County Court to one to three years in prison. He pleaded guilty to DWI and vehicular manslaughter in October.
The October 2009 crash killed 22-year-old Matthew Girouard (Jeh-RARD') of Thendara and 24-year-old Craig Sears of Eagle Bay. The accident happened on Route 28 near Old Forge, about 100 miles northeast of Syracuse.
During sentencing, Lewis apologized for all the grief he brought upon the community and family of his friends. Girouard's mother read a letter in court asking the judge for leniency, saying putting Lewis in prison would only add another tragedy and more suffering.
