WASHINGTON (AP) -- Seneca Nation President Robert Odawi Porter hopes to ask for President Barack Obama's support in the Indians' fight with New York over cigarette taxes.
Porter will be at the White House today to attend a meeting on Indian issues with Obama. He told the Buffalo News that he'll be one of hundreds of tribal leaders from throughout the country at the Tribal Nations Summit hosted by the president.
Porter expects the summit to focus on economic development issues. He said Obama, so far, hasn't kept promises he made at a similar meeting with tribal leaders last year.
New York state officials deny Porter's allegation that their efforts to tax cigarette sales from Indians to non-Indians are illegal.
