SYRACUSE -- By now, you’ve probably heard that we did indeed set a new December snowfall record in Syracuse with 70.8” of snow as of late in the day Friday. As a matter of fact, at this point we’re less than eight inches away from a snowfall record for ANY month in Syracuse, the current is 78.1” in January of 2004.
This December record and being so close to an all time record certainly does make one wonder how much more snow the rest of the winter will bring us? Of course, to get technical about it, winter doesn’t technically arrive until 6:38 p.m. this Tuesday the 21st.
I did a little research to see what happened in the other top snowiest Decembers?
After those very snowy Decembers, what did the total winter snowfall end up being?
We’ll, here is what I came up with…
Other top December snowfalls Total Winter snowfall
70.3” in 2000 191.9”
64.6” in 1989 162.0”
57.3” in 2008 149.6”
53.0” in 2005 124.6”
Each winter total snowfall was above normal, and notice, the more snow we received in December, the more above normal for the entire winter we were. Oh Boy....
Now some fun math. My math skills are pretty rusty, but the way I figured it, the difference between the December snowfall and the total snowfall for the winter is a multiple of 2.54 (average), i.e.… on average, whatever the December snowfall was, the entire winter ended up as roughly 2.54 times the December total.
So, lets just say we ended up this December 83 inches of snow (I just picked this number as a reasonable possibility). Take that 83 inches multiplied by 2.54 and that gives us a total winter snowfall of 210 inches. Oh Boy…
WARNING! Don’t be alarmed! This is only some fun math. It could mean nothing…
On the other hand, looking above, numbers don’t lie as they say. As they also say, only time will tell!
