ILION (AP) -- A Mohawk Valley  man is accused of falsely reporting an an incident after police say he told people he planned to kill himself at a town park, touching off an extensive search in subfreezing weather.

Police say 42-year-old Scott Kelly of Ilion sent several text messages to two people Tuesday afternoon saying he was at a local park and planned to commit suicide. One of the people called police and a search was launched.

The search was called off a couple of house later when Kelly was located at a home in Herkimer. In addition to a misdemeanor charge, police say they hope to recoup $1,900 in restitution to cover the cost of the search.
