Annie Hughley says it's the generosity of others that keeps her ringing her bell. For 7 years she's been volunteering with the Salvation Army.

Monday night, her red kettle was a little fuller than usual thanks to a $95 donation. "It's going to families who really deserve it during the holiday season," said Allison Schunck, who help raise the money.

"I felt wonderful because that was the help we needed and we really need people to give like that," said Hughley.

But overall, donations are down about 24% this year. To reach it's goal, The Salvation Army in Syracuse needs to raise another $50,000 in the next 4 days.  There are kettles stationed at grocery stores and shopping centers around Central New York. Money dropped in helps to support 40 programs run by the non-profit and more than 40,000 people in Onondaga County year round.

"It helps do everything from counseling programs to homeless shelters. Our homeless shelter here in Syracuse is the only family shelter for homeless families. We are up 63% in the last two years with the numbers of families staying with us," said Linda Wright with the Salvation Army. "It helps keep our food pantries staffed and also stocked."

It's estimated every dollar donated provides $4 worth of help, which is why Linda Rezak always gives what she can. "This time of year we always try to do as much as we can to help people who don't have as much and aren't as fortunate as we are," she said.

Hughley says that selfless holiday spirit warms her heart, and keeps her on her feet. "As long as the good lord lets me do it, I really like ringing the bell for the Salvation Army."

You can drop off donations at any red kettle or online at the virtual red kettle.

You can also send a check to The Salvation Army, 677 S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY 13202.
