Thurman, a two-year old Labrador Retriever puppy, was out playing at Syracuse's Inner Harbor last January when he fell through the ice and into the frigid water.

Syracuse Police Officer John Szakalski took off his gun belt to make himself lighter, then crawled out on the ice, on his belly, to reach the dog and pull him out.

Szakalski says he never thought twice about the risk to himself. That's what makes him a Red Cross Real Hero for 2010!
