SYRACUSE -- Syracuse University punter Rob Long, who is recovering from recent surgery to remove a brain tumor, announced Tuesday that tests show the cancer cells to be malignant.
In a statement forwarded to the media through the SU athletic department, Long said a post-operation follow up Monday revealed that there were malignant cells remaining that will require further treatment.
Addressing his fans and supporters, Long also said “This is obviously a difficult time for my family and me. However, we remain optimistic and positive toward a favorable outcome to this situation. I believe that I am in the best hands with a team of Oncologists and together we will continue to fight and persevere through this until I am back to full health.
Thank you again for all of your prayers and support.”
Long, a senior captain, underwent brain surgery on December 14 in Philadelphia. He said he had been experiencing headaches for the previous several weeks. A subsequent MRI examination on December 2 revealed the tumor.
Long finished his SU career ranked second on the school's career punting average list at 43.3 yards per punt. He will miss the team’s upcoming Pinstripe Bowl vs. Kansas State on December 30 at Yankee Stadium, although Orange coach Doug Marrone says Long is expected to attend the game.
Marrone says Long's treatment is expected to begin after the New Year.
CNY Central would like to collect your thoughts and send them to Long while he recovers. Please leave your well-wishes as a comment below, and we will make sure he receives them.
