(AP) -- State police say a 35-year-old snowmobiler died after he was thrown from his sled in a crash with another snowmobile.
Troopers say the accident happened early Thursday afternoon in the town of Theresa in Jefferson County, about 80 miles northeast of Syracuse. Three snowmobilers were riding along an old rail bed when the lead sled came to a washout. The rider, Nicholas Sherwood of Evans Mills, stopped and tried to flag down his companions to warn them.
Police say 35-year-old Michael Mowery crested a hill at a high rate of speed and struck Sherwood's stopped sled. Mowery was thrown from his sled, striking an earth embankment head-first.
Mowery was pronounced dead after he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
