While the holiday shopping season is over and done with, the holiday return season hasn't even begun.
December 26th is the day many people will be returning those Christmas gifts, and stores will be opening early to accommodate the crowds.
According to Consumer Reports, one in five Americans is expected to return a Christmas gift this year.
Here are some tips on how to avoid the holiday return hassle:
You Don't Need a Receipt, But It Helps
Some stores like Best Buy do not require a receipt with a return, but other stores' policies differ. Target requires receipts with returning online purchases in the store.
Consumer Reports says the key is to read the fine print.
Watch Out For Restocking Fees
Some stores charge as much as 25% for restocking fees. The rates depend on the store, and what item you're trying to return.
Know Your Timetable
The amount of time you have to return a gift is anywhere from 15-90 days.
However, if you bought a gift during the holidays, the clock doesn't usually start until December 26th.
The best thing you can do is check each stores' return policies so you have all the information before making the return.
