SMITHFIELD, MADISON CO. (AP) -- State police say a Central New York man has died from injuries suffered when he was he was accidentally hit by the door of his friend's pickup truck as the friend backed out of the man's driveway.
Troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 68-year-old Richard McNamara of Pleasant Valley Road in Smithfield died around 9:20 p.m. Monday at Upstate University Hospital.
They say McNamara was standing in the driveway of his rural Madison County home late Monday morning while talking to 80-year-old Laverne Jones of Roher Road in Smithfield. Troopers say Jones had the driver's side door open when he put the Ford F-250 in reverse, striking McNamara and knocking him down.
McNamara hit his head on a patch of ice. He was airlifted to University Hospital with head trauma, and underwent surgery.
Troopers say the accident remains under investigation but it appears unlikely that Jones will be charged.
