SYRACUSE -- All lanes of Interstate 81 south are open once again near the intersection of I-81 and I-481 after a truck struck a bridge Thursday morning.
Syracuse Police say a 'low boy' commercial tractor-trailer carrying a metal container hit the bottom of the E. Glen Avenue bridge between E. Brighton Avenue and Loretto, near the intersection of Interstate 81 and Interstate 481 (exit 16A) around 9:25 a.m. A pickup truck escorting the truck then hit the container, which had fallen off of the truck and onto the highway.
The State Department of Transportation says I-81 southbound traffic is reduced to one lane in the area of the crash while crews work to clear the scene. I-481 northbound is also closed at I-81 split, as well as the I-81 south on-ramp at Calthrop Avenue.
Drivers are advised to find an alternate route to get on I-81 south, and officials say traffic could be delayed for hours while the vehicles are removed and DOT inspectors check on the integrity of the bridge.
Police have identified the driver of the tractor trailer as 34-year-old Gregory Warren of Tully. Warren was issued several traffic tickets, including operating a vehicle that was overheight and overwidth without a permit.
Police say two people in the pickup truck, 35-year-old Robert Tuffley of Minoa and 41-year-old Erich Mingles of Romulus, were treated for minor injuries at Crouse Hospital and released.
