PALERMO -- A Palermo man is accused of making up an elaborate story to cover up his own crime.
State Police say Michael Murphy, 20, stole a chainsaw in September 2009 from the Palermo Fire Department when he was a volunteer.
They say he called police and made up a story about interrupting a burglary in progress. Murphy was re-interviewed last December. That's when police say he admitted to taking the chainsaw.
Murphy also admitted stealing rope and rescue gear a short time after the 2009 incident.
Murphy was arraigned in the Town of Palermo Court and remanded to the Oswego County Jail on $1,000 cash and $2,000 bond.
