Think of it as getting girls into business
It's a rite of winter for Central New Yorkers: Girl Scouts (and Brownies) selling boxes of their cookies.
Pam Hyland, the CEO of scouting for this area, says it's really a way to get young women started in thinking about business, by making them work at goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.
So, having mom take the order forms to the office and doing all the work is not the goal.
Hyland says the program also teaches 'giving'---some of the proceeds, and in some cases cookies purchased for donations, go to the community's needy or to serving military members.
This year's cookies will sell at $3.50 a box, and are the same varieties as last year (Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Samoas, Trefoils, Do-Si-Dos, Lemon Chalet Cremes, Dulce de Leche and Thank You Berry Munch). Orders will be taken starting January 15th, with 'booth sales' in February and March. For more information (or if you're not contacted) 698-9400 or www.gsnypenn.org
