LIVERPOOL -- For 21 years, it's been a holiday tradition in Central New York.
Sunday night, Lights on the Lake is wrapped up a record year.
"We had a phenomenal show, we've beaten car count records (and) we've beaten attendance records," said Bill Lansley, Commissioner of Onondaga County Parks and Recreation. "From beginning to end (it's been) the most successful Lights on the Lake in 21 years."
Lansley said about 38,000 cars have passed through the lighted displays this year. He said each car brought, on average, about four or five people-- meaning upwards of 170,000 people came through in cars alone. Also helping out attendance -- this year's First Night celebration, which attracted thousands of people despite being closed to car traffic.
And there might not be a better way to end Lights on the Lake than with a touch of snow. Lansley said it adds to the festive atmosphere -- just as long as it doesn't snow too much.
"(When) we had the big snowfall, (it) kind of held our car counts down for a couple of days," he said. "But the show is so much better when you have snow on the ground and it's snowing out...it gives you a real nice festive feel to it."
Lights on the Lake finished for the season at 10 pm Sunday. The clean-up starts Monday at 7 am. Depending on the weather, it could take more than a month to finish.
