The New York State Thruway Authority has issued a travel advisory urging people to stay away from the New York City area Tuesday night and Wednesday morning because of a snowstorm that is coming up the east coast that could leave 10 inches of snow.

Here is the advisory:

LOWER HUDSON VALLEY SNOWSTORM TRAFFIC ADVISORY
Unnecessary Travel Should be Avoided

A new major winter snowstorm is forecast for the lower Hudson Valley that could bring up to 10 inches of snow by late Tuesday into Wednesday. The New York State Thruway Authority advises motorists to avoid any unnecessary travel in the New York region during this severe weather event.

The snowstorm will produce high winds, and possibly up to a foot of snow through certain periods of the day and night. The storm will therefore cause dangerous driving conditions.

The Thruway Authority offers these winter driving safety tips:

  • Check your vehicle’s battery, ignition system, lights, brakes, tires, exhaust system and windshield wipers.
  • Be alert and allow more distance between your vehicle and others.
  • Avoid slamming on brakes.
  • Always buckle your seat belt and require your passengers do the same.
  • Keep at least half a tank of gasoline in your vehicle at all times.
  • Pack an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, flashlight with extra batteries, first-aid kit, drinking water, food, small shovel, ice scraper/brush, cell phone with batteries, emergency flares, gloves, hats, and any needed medication.

At times of inclement weather, motorists will be advised through electronic Variable Message Signs along the roadway, TRANSalerts, and the Thruway Highway Advisory Radio. Should an emergency occur, motorists are advised to call either 1-800-842-2233 or 911.

Motorists may find the latest forecasts through the National Weather Service for regions along the Thruway by visiting http://www.thruway.ny.gov/weather/. In addition, the Winter Travel Advisory map may be found on the Thruway website at http://www.thruway.ny.gov/wtas/netdata/.
