The latest in a series of storms is intensifying and making it’s way up the Atlantic seaboard and should be centered some 125 miles east of New York City at daybreak Wednesday. As we know from the Christmas storm, there were literally thousands of flights cancelled and tens of thousands of fliers stranded. Now, with this latest storm working up the coast, I expect more major travel issues at east coast airports through Wednesday.
Now, I am not a pilot and I don’t run any airport operations or handle airline reservations, but knowing when the worst weather hits the major airports in the east, we as meteorologists have a pretty good idea of when the greatest impact on passengers will be.
If you are travelling to or through…
Charlotte:
Expect delays Tuesday morning and midday. Flights should improve through the afternoon and into the evening.
Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia:
Problems begin developing Tuesday afternoon and continue into the night
New York City/Newark:
Problems begin late Tuesday evening, get worse overnight and the potential for major flight issues, delays and cancellations for early flights on Wednesday.
Boston:
Flight problems begin early in the day and get progressively worse.
How do I check for flight delays online?
Here is the FAA web site. It provides up-to-the-minute flight delay and cancellation information for all of the country’s major airports.
And here are home pages for some of the major airlines that would provide flight delay and cancellation information if needed.
Delta
U.S. Air
Continental
Jetblue
Southwest
