Mother arrested, accused of murder

Police hold news conference about abandoned baby.

Amid-afternoon e-mail zipped into our Inbox. The Liverpool Police had figured out who the mother was of the infant abandoned in a dumpster just over one week ago. As soon as the information came to us we posted the Breaking News on CNYCentral.com. We added it to our Facebook page. Alerts went out on Twitter. At the same time we mobilized crews to go cover the news event for our 5:00 and 6:00 pm newscasts on NBC 3 and CBS 5. That same live crew would send back the signal to stream on our website and our digital 3.3 channel. I would anchor the breaking news from the set.

10:50 pm

That was one part of the day.

Just as I was writing this blog tonight shortly before 11:00 pm police faxed out some new Breaking News information. They had moved to arrest the mother of the abandoned infant. Toward the end of our 10:00 newscast on CW 6 producer Kristy Smorol fed me the information about the arrest in my earpiece. We were the first to tell Central New York what happened.

Police and prosecutors say Nicole Dejaynes murdered her baby. They arrested her tonight because she suddenly had been released from the medical facility without warning to police. They were concerned she was a flight risk.

Just moments after we shared news of the arrest on the 10:00 we began our 11:00 newscasts on NBC 3. Working without a script our staff adjusted quickly. Nearly instantly the word spread on our two television stations, web and social media. Frenetic and urgent effort for an important story.

Sadly, the charge is the most serious possible. We do not yet know what caused the death of Isabella. We do know police and prosecutors are holding her other responsible.
