TUCSON, ARIZONA (AP) -- Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords keeps jumping over obstacles to recovery from a gunshot wound to the head but optimistic doctors are also expressing caution.

Doctors say the extent of her recovery remains uncertain because it's rare for people with gunshot wounds to the head to regain all of their abilities.

Still, her condition has now been upgraded from critical to serious.

Her doctors' decision yesterday was yet another sign of a remarkable recovery since she was shot in the head Jan. 8 when a gunman opened fire as she met constituents in a Tucson supermarket parking lot. Six people were killed and 13 injured.

She responded from the moment she arrived at the emergency room and has made more progress since.

A tracheotomy on Saturday was uneventful and she also got a feeding tube. Doctors speculate that they might soon know if she can speak.
