Most of us want to see the best in people. We search for the happy ending or at least the less offensive one. Such was the case with the discovery two weeks ago of the body of a newborn infant in a dumpster in a Liverpool apartment complex. The community was horrified, but tried to find compassion and understanding for how a very young troubled girl might have given birth to a still born child. She might have felt so alone she had no other choice.
Along the way the Liverpool police named her Isabella. They promised her a real funeral. They reaffirmed our desire to find the best in people.
More than a week passed before we learned the name of the mother of the child, Nicole Dejaynes. We were surprised to learn she was 29 years old and already a mother. Some people harshly criticized her in the social network world with venomous commentary. Yet, most still hoped for an explanation related to a still birth not the killing of a newborn.
Today we learned from the Medical Examiner the baby was suffocated. Prosecutors are taking the case to the grand jury to see if there's enough evidence to pursue Murder in the Second Degree. The grand jury will be asked to charge a mother with suffocating her newborn baby moments after child birth.
Even with that evidence presented and the disbelief people share in the act committed the community is still looking for the good. They're finding it in the angelic spirit of a baby named Isabella and hoping that the terrible ending to her brief life reminds other troubled mothers to be there are other options. There are always other options.
