SYRACUSE -- The next time you go to check out a book at the Onondaga County Public Library (OCPL), be prepared to fork over your library card along with a picture of yourself.

In an effort to beef up security, you will now need your own library card along with a photo in your card record or a photo ID. The change, which goes into effect February 14th, affects the Central Library, city branches and the Syracuse community center satellite libraries. Suburban libraries are not affected.

The policy change was approved by the OCPL Board of Trustees.

"While the card will look the same to library card holders, the electronic library record will include the additional security of photo identification," said Elizabeth Daily, OCPL Executive Director.

Do you think the new security measures are a good idea? Do you think it is a necessary precaution or goes too far? Would it make you think twice about utilizing services at the library? Leave your thoughts below.
