Winter weather advisories are in effect for Central New York.  Winter storm warnings have been cancelled.

Yesterday we alerted you that we needed to keep a sharp eye on not only the amount of precipitation heading our way, but also the type of precipitation. In my updated forecast, both the amounts and types have changed somewhat. What does this mean? Some spots get more snow and heavier accumulations. Other areas of central and southern New York, will get noticeably less total snowfall due to more sleet and freezing rain.

The worst and heaviest storm totals today will occur across the northern third of north-central and northern New York. Areas of northern and eastern Oswego, northern Oneida, Lewis, Jefferson, Herkimer and Saint Lawrence counties will receive 6-12” of snow. Some isolated 12”+ amounts will be possible over sections of then northern and eastern Tug Hill Plateau and Lewis county.

For a large chunk of Central New York, including Syracuse and the Thruway corridor, steady overnight snow has changed to ice pellets and has become much more intermittent. In addition, the heaviest precipitation for the rest of the day will likely occur east of Lake Ontario. This combination will likely mean snow/sleet totals ranging from as little as 3” for Syracuse and the Thruway corridor to perhaps as much as 4-6” for areas in south central Oswego and Oneida counties.  The precipitation will be mainly sleet and freezing rain across the Finger Lakes and the central and southern tier. This will keep total snow amounts much, much lower and more in the sloppy, icy, slushy mess category.

Here is map of observed snow totals from our weather watchers.

Between all of this snow, sleet and freezing rain mess, here is a forecast map of snow totals today.

We will have some additional snow and minor lake effect snow tonight through Thursday morning. Click here for additional snowfall tonight.

This storm has covered a large piece of real estate. This will be large and impactful storm for many parts of the country. If you have travel plans between Tuesday and Wednesday, flights may be cancelled. You will want to call ahead to your airline and also keep an eye on this website for potential airport problems
