More than 500 athletes from across the state will be in Syracuse for the Special Olympics Winter Games this weekend.
Opening ceremonies are this evening at the Oncenter, including a parade of athletes, a pipe band performance and lighting of a cauldron. On Saturday, six events will be held at five locations, including floor hockey at the Oncenter, snowshoeing at Thornden Park, figure skating at the War Memorial and alpine skiing at Toggenburg Mountain.
More than 700 volunteers have signed up to help and organizers expect more than a thousand when events get under way. Many of the volunteers will be "fans in the stands" who will have pom-poms and signs to cheer on the athletes.
Anyone wishing to be a fan can show up at one of the locations on Saturday morning and sign up.
