SYRACUSE (AP) -- The family of the late New York Times columnist William Safire has loaned more of his personal papers to Syracuse University, where archivists will use an $86,000 grant to organize the materials.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports Friday that the family deposited the latest trove with the university in 2010. The 1978 Pulitzer Prize winner for commentary died from pancreatic cancer in September 2009 at 79.

Safire donated material to the university between 1994 and 1998. The latest items include correspondence with former President Bill Clinton, author Norman Mailer and other notables. Safire's estate also donated about 1,700 volumes from his book collection to the college.

Safire attended Syracuse in the late 1940s and was a member of its board of trustees.
