SYRACUSE (AP) -- A 47-year-old state prison inmate is accused of filing for more than $740 million in false tax refunds in a federal grand jury indictment.
An eight-count indictment against Ronald Williams, an inmate at Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie, N.Y., says that between 2007 and 2009 he filed eight claims for federal refunds totaling $740.5 million.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Duncan says Friday that Williams never collected any money.
Williams, who's serving a prison sentence of two to four years on a conviction of criminal possession of stolen property, would face up to five more years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted in the tax scheme.
The indictment comes a week after federal officials announced a crackdown on federal prisoners filing bogus tax refunds from their cells.
