It takes hard work and dedication to compete at the 2011 New York State Winter Special Olympics. Daniel Fletcher has been training for years, and has his sights set high. "I love floor hockey, it's the best and I have loads of friends as well," he said.
You could feel the excitement in the Oncenter as fans cheered and welcomed the competitors into the opening ceremony. This weekend they'll compete against some of the best special athletes in the state in 6 olympic-events including figure skating at the War Memorial, skiing at Toggenburg Mountain and snowshoeing at Thornden Park
"I love special olympics - very special very special!" said athlete George Hanna.
"It means the whole world being with my friends," said athlete Steven Lottie.
The healthy competition helps build confidence in the athletes, something Warren Fletcher has seen first hand in his son. "The most important thing he gets out of it, is he gets to be strong with his friends and help each one of them out. It's about more than competition, it's camaraderie. Its bringing guys together from all walks of life, they learn the sport and show they have the spirit to compete," said Fletcher who also coaches his son's team.
That spirit inspires their drive to go for the gold but they will all win a valuable experience.
"I hope we can be winning but if we can't, then we just need to be more positive and learn what we need to do," said Joanne Coutinho.
All events are free and open to the public, and the community is encouraged to come out and cheer the athletes. Click here for a schedule.
