Some Syracuse homeowners are shocked after seeing their property reassessment. Many attended a grievance hearing on the issue Monday night.

A reassessment aims to put a price on your homes "true market value," and it ensures people are paying their fair share of property taxes. While some homes go up, some come down and some also stay the same.

The Assessor's Office says with more than 42, 000 properties in the city, only a couple thousand are re-assessed each year. This year, the city focused on a few areas that saw a lot of home sales in the past year, including the Strathmore neighborhood. The city says these neighborhoods haven't been done in years, which is why some of those homeowners are seeing such an increase in their assessments.

If you want to grieve your reassessment, you can download a form off the city of Syracuse's website and bring it to the Assessor's Office through February. You should also bring evidence to support your case and why you think your home isn't worth as much as it is assessed.
