OSWEGO -- For Man in the Moon Candies in Oswego, Valentines Day is the busiest time of the year, but that doesn't stop the shops owner, Amy Lear, from going out of her way to send chocolates to troops serving overseas. "It's a very small thing on our part. but to them its huge," she says.
Lear started sending chocolates to troops after getting an e-mail from SFC Matthew Castaldo, an Oswego native and fan of Man in the Moon's chocolates. Castaldo told Lear her chocolates were his favorite and asked if she could send some so he could share them with his platoon in Afghanistan. The request moved Lear to tears. "I was crying, it made me choke up and get teary eyed. Just the fact that something I consider so little meant so much to them," she says.
With the help of donations from the community, Lear was able to send almost 50 pounds of chocolate to Afghanistan just before Christmas. She hopes to be able to send more of her chocolates to soldiers longing for a little taste of home. For more information or to make a donation, click on Man in the Moon Candies.
