(AP) -- Troopers are warning the public about a phone scam where a caller claims to be a state police criminal investigator requesting money to cover a bad debt.

Police say the callers have strong foreign accents and claim that money is needed to satisfy a loan, credit card or cash advance debt owed to a collections company, usually called "Advance Cash Net." The caller ID shows up as a legitimate New York state area code number and the caller may provide a legitimate law enforcement address.

Troopers say recipients of unsolicited phone calls or emails should not share any personal information and should contact local or state police. The New York State Police does not engage in any kind of collections practice.
