SYRACUSE -- School districts around central New York will be closed next week for the annual mid winter break. That has many  families planning February getaways.   Syracuse city officials say if you are traveling out of Hancock Airport, get their early.  Here's the complete release.

The City of Syracuse Department of Aviation is urging those flying out of Syracuse for the next several days to follow these guidelines when traveling during mid-winter break: check the status of your flight prior to leaving for the airport, arrive at least an hour and a half prior to your scheduled departure time and give yourself enough time to park, check-in and process through security, and remember to pack checked bags and carry-no's according to Transportation Security Administration guidelines. Several of the airlines operating out of the Syracuse Airport have indicated heavier than normal load factors leading up to the week of Feb. 21.
Airport officials are encouraged by the increase in passengers seen during the December holidays, and anticipate more people will be traveling to warmer destinations next week. “2010 ended with an increase in passenger numbers when compared with 2009,” said Interim Aviation Commissioner Christina Reale. “We expect this trend to continue as consumer confidence continues to grow, and leisure travel increases.”
The Department of Aviation has made available additional parking facilities should the Airport experience a need for overflow parking. In that case, passengers should follow the signs for overflow parking.
The Transportation Security Administration is reminding travelers to be prepared when coming through the airport security checkpoint during the upcoming travel period. Travelers should remember to have ready a valid form of government issued identification, remove shoes, coats, and other metal object such as keys, coins, jewelry, etc. and have laptops and the “3-1-1” bag out and placed in the screening bins. Those flying out of Syracuse can expect no changes in the security screening process, as currently, Syracuse does not utilize advanced image technology.
Those individuals who have questions regarding security procedures or would like travel tips should contact the Transportation Security Administration at (866) 289-9673 or visit their website at
