SYRACUSE -- National Grid customers have gotten a letter, which may look like it's from National Grid, but it isn't. It is a marketing letter for outdoor wiring. It says people can buy an insurance policy for your furnace or outdoor wiring.

The letter is actually from a company called HomeServe. In August of last year, HomeServe purchased a portion of National Grid's business which operated in Long Island and Massachusetts which was called National Grid Energy Services.

National Grid wants people to know the letter is not a bill from the company. Patrick Stella, a spokesperson for National Grid, says people should look at the policy and the information and see if it makes sense to them.

"We understand there's been some confusion on the part of our Upstate, NY customers and we are speaking with HomeServe and the PSC (Public Service Commission) to try and clear up some of that confusion.," Stella said. "We did not provide any customer information to HomeServe when we sold that company."

The PSC has a letter posted on its website regarding situation. The letter says HomeServe is not affiliated with National Grid. The letter also says:

"National Grid is responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing its electric distribution systems including exterior electric wiring to the point at which electric lines connect to a residence, as well as for installing, maintaining and repairing the electric meter. Customers pay for those services through rates charges by National Grid. Customers, not National Grid, are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing equipment beyond the service connection point, except for the electric meter."

Customers needing further assistance can contact the New York State Public Service Commission. The number for the HelpLine is 1-800-342-3377.
