PITTSFORD, NY (AP) -- The State Department says two of three students from Afghanistan missing from an upstate New York college program have been heard from, but their whereabouts remain a mystery.

Nazareth College near Rochester reported February 6 that one student had failed to report for activities related to a cultural exchange program. On Saturday, two more were reported missing.

The State Department says Thursday that one student has been in touch with her family to say she's safe. Another has contacted the program through a lawyer.

Authorities say they don't yet know what the students' intentions are and don't believe they're crime victims. They were among 20 students from Afghanistan participating in the program at the private college that's scheduled to end March 6.

The program is overseen by the State Department.
