CAMILLUS -- We saw a number of snowmobile related accidents this weekend across Central New York. Now, folks who have been riding for decades are reminding others to be safe on the trails.
Ernest Roosevelt is Onondaga County's Director for the New York State Snowmobile Association. He said there are a number of things to keep in mind before you ride. First, he said knowing your terrain is a must. If that means heading on to a frozen lake -- it's best to check with locals about the current conditions. He said it is never a good idea to just drive on a lake without checking.
He also said thousands of dollars are spent each year marking and grooming trails. Roosevelt said you should always stay on trails. A patch of fresh white snow off the trail might look inviting, but Roosevelt said you don't know what's underneath it -- it could be a stump or a rock.
