There is still $1 million worth of rebates available through New York's Great Appliance Swap Out. The money has become available because about 10,000 people who reserved a rebate did not complete the rebate application process.
The rebates are available to New Yorkers who replace old appliances with Energy Star appliances. The program is designed to help consumers save on their energy costs by reducing energy usage.
On Monday, appliance shoppers were taking advantage of the rebate program in Syracuse.
"I walked in, and it was there, so it's great," says Debra King, who bought a washing machine at Ra-Lin.
The program has also helped local retailers.
Gary Pinto, the sales manager at Olum's Appliances and Electronics in Northern Lights Plaza, says the program helps boost sales while the economy is struggling.
"People are more likely to try and improve what they have vs. starting anew someplace else, so having this type of rebate come through makes it fantastic," he says.
This state is reminding customers that they have to complete the entire process to receive their rebates. Reserving a rebate online does not complete the application process. Once a rebate has been reserved, the applicant must submit a signed copy of the application and required receipts within 14 days to complete the application process.
The amount of money received for the rebates varies. For refrigerators or clothes washers, customers can receive $75. People who buy eligible freezers can receive $50.
The state says Energy Star appliances also help consumers save money in the long run. Because the appliances use less electricity, people should see a decrease in their electric bills.
