ALBION, NY -- Police say a 15-year-old upstate New York girl who went missing a month ago was raped and killed by her brother-in-law and then buried in an apple orchard.
Albion Police Chief Dean London says 21-year-old Carlos Cardenas is being held on a second-degree murder charge. The remains of Katherine Sanchez were unearthed Friday in an Orleans County orchard where the suspect once worked. An autopsy showed she was suffocated.
London said Sunday that Cardenas told investigators he killed Sanchez on Jan. 15, after she threatened to tell her sister he'd raped her.
Police say Cardenas is a Mexican national in the country illegally.
They didn't know Monday if Cardenas has a lawyer. He's due in Albion Town Court, about 30 miles west of Rochester, on Thursday.
