NORTH SYRACUSE -- Updated at 4:40pm

Tonight the North Syracuse School Board will start the process of replacing Superintendent Jerome Melvin.

We spoke with Dr. Jessica Cohen, OCM BOCES Superintendent, this afternoon. She will conduct the search for a new superintendent. Tonight at a special board meeting, Dr. Cohen will go over a proposed timeline for the search with board members, along with discussing what the job vacancy announcement should look like, and what qualities a successful candidate should have.

The timeline has not finalized by the board yet, but Dr. Cohen says the vacancy announcement should be sent out by early next week. Applications are expected to be in by the end of March. Initial interviews will be conducted in late April to mid-May, with finalists chosen towards the end of May.

The first round of interviews will be conducted by the school board. Once two or three finalists have been chosen, those candidates will be interviewed by a variety of groups, including students, parents, community members, teachers, and administrators.

Dr. Cohen says a final candidate should be selected in early June, with a formal announcement made in late June. The new superintendent is expected to start in August or September.

Again, this timeline has not been finalized by the school board yet, but it will be discussed at tonight's board meeting. The meeting will be held at 6pm in the Administrative Offices on West Taft Road in North Syracuse.

Original story:

The North Syracuse Central School District will hold a special board of education meeting this evening as the district begins its search for a replacement for superintendent Dr. Jerome Melvin who is retiring.

The board will hear from OCM BOCES superintendent Dr. Jessica Cohen to review the process used in conducting a search for candidates to fill the superintendent vacancy.

Melvin is retiring after his second stint as North Syracuse superintendent. He was first appointed to the job in 1992 and retired in 2000. He spent the next five years working as an interim superintendent in several school districts as those districts searched for permanent superintendents. He returned to his old job in North Syracuse in 2005.
